Undoubtedly there is pressing and growing need for dramatically increased numbers of qualified UAS pilots and sensor operators. Currently militaries are working to find innovative and cost effective ways and means to train and educate them. Traditional means are just not up to standard in delivering sufficient numbers to meet the operational demand.

Jeff Kappenman began his lifelong aviation career as a 16 year-old in the University of North Dakota’s Epoch Pilot Programme in 1978. Upon graduation from UND with a BS in Aeronautics in 1983, Jeff was commissioned as an Army 2nd Lieutenant and proceeded to rotary wing flight school at Ft. Rucker, AL. During his 26 year military career, COL Kappenman has flown operational missions across the globe in every environment and condition. Possessing a unique blend of Special Operations and conventional army aviation experience, he is a master army aviator with qualifications in a half dozen turbine helicopters and 2,750 hours including over 900 night vision goggle hours. Jeff has commanded at every level from platoon through brigade, and has successfully led air/ground task forces in excess of 1,000 soldiers, 75 aircraft, and several hundred ground vehicles worth over $250 million. He was a Fully Mission Qualified aviator with the legendary Nightstalkers of Task Force 160.

Most recently Jeff served as the centralised manager for all UAS development and held full line authority for the Training and Doctrine Commanding General. In this capacity, Jeff was the chief requirements and training director that drove the Army’s very successful five Major Defense Acquisition Programmes valued at over $5 billion including the Raven, Shadow, Hunter, ERMP, OSRVT, and OSGCS. Jeff is professionally associated with the Army Aviation Association of America, the Association of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles International, holds a MS in Strategic Studies from the Army War College and is an honored member of the Orders of St. George(Bronze) and St. Michael(Silver).
